No Loot For Lewdness
Chrysler, General Motors, Ford, AIG, Bank of America, JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch are just a few who have asked the government for several billion dollars in bailout money. They are not the only ones wanting bailed out, the porn industry is also requesting 5 billion dollars.
With annual sales of 10-14 billion dollars does the porn industry need 5 billion from the government? The annual sales amounts come from internet sales, adult videos, toys, and magazines. According to Adult Video News(AVN), an industry trade magazine, Americans spent just over 4 billion dollars to buy and rent adult videos in 2008. The porn industry is a very profitable entity. Adult internet sales raise the largest amount of money each year.
So what is porn? Well, it's an industry that exaggerates the size of everything including its necessity to our way of life. What is pornography worth? Adult video is 500 thousand to 1.8 million, internet sites and magazines are 1 billion, and, lastly, pay-per-view movies rake in 128 million. After those few large amounts, do you honestly believe that the porn industry is going in the hole?
So with the large annual income the porn industry has, why do they need 5 billion dollars? A spokesperson says the government should just be considerate and give the porn industry the 5 billion just as they would bailout the "Big Three" or the banking industry. Larry Flynt, Hustler publisher, says it is really not the porn industry it's the nation in general. Perhaps Mr. Flynt feels that we can do without cars but not without sex. The 5 billion dollar figure they have requested is to make up for the 18 billion dollar loss of revenue following a decline in the US adult entertainment industry.
The porn industry is not immune from the bad economy. The difference is that a bailout in banking and automaking are a necessity to our way of life, whereas, the porn industry is but a luxury item and luxury items, and should not be elgible for bailout money. Many American businesses utilize vehicles daily, however, no one rides Penthouse to work.
I agree to a certain degree
I agree with this to a certain degree. As much as the banks and the auto industry and everyone else wanting a bailout why should the porn industry or any other industry not get a shot at some money. Just look at the company AIG. They received all this money only for the taxpayers to find out that the money was for bonuses for the company CEOs. The porn industry would like some bonuses also. So should they be excluded based on the fact that they provide entertainment to people everyday?
